Christmas is an extraordinary time in Central Florida and more specifically at Lakeshore in Oxford, Florida. With temperatures regularly in the mid-70s throughout December and the lakes of the region looking more inviting than ever, it may seem a bit difficult to think of yule logs and twinkling lights. A cottage home lifestyle is a perfect way to deck the halls, though. From community events to your own special celebrations, here are our 5 favorite things to do while celebrating the holidays in a cottage home!
CHRISTMAS MOVIE NIGHTS
As the t-shirt reads, “All I want is a warm blanket, a glass of wine, and a Hallmark Christmas movie.” So maybe the warm blanket is a bit much. What better way to celebrate the holidays than to stream the classics at home or even break out a title or two from your own DVD collection? Throw on your favorite pajamas or basketball shorts, cozy up in the living room, dim the lights, and grab a bowl of popcorn before pressing play on holiday movies like the perennial favorite It’s A Wonderful Life, the hilarious Elf, or the timeless tale of holiday mishaps, A Christmas Story.
CHRISTMAS LIGHT TOUR IN LAKELAND
If a night in just doesn’t give you all the festive feels, hop in the car and head to Lakeland, Florida. Less than 90-minutes away, Lakeland is known for its bedazzled neighborhoods. With residents dressed up and passing out candy canes on Lancelot Drive off Lake Miriam to 1931 Cherokee Trail where according to the homeowner “…dancing lights run from 6:00-10:00 PM nightly…,” children of all ages are welcome to watch from the comfort of their vehicle and tune into the FM station provided for a full sensory experience! If lights are something you enjoy, then Lakeland is for you. You can even find a great listing of participating streets and neighborhoods by visiting The Lakeland Mom.
CELEBRATE THE HOLIDAYS AT A FESTIVE FARM
https://liveplaytvall.com/christmas/cruise/Jim and Glen Cottom originally wanted to cheer up their mother during Christmas of 1981. Christmas Day was, after all, Glenn and Edna Cottom’s wedding anniversary, but Mr. Cottom had passed away a few months earlier. After Edna died a couple of years later, the brothers just kept lighting up the ranch on Marion County Road south of Weirsdale, FL (just about 15 minutes from Simple Life) every Christmas. People began to ask when the lights would go on each year and they have, each holiday season just after Thanksgiving. Located at 4250 Marion County Road, east of State Road 25, hundreds of thousands of lights in static and moving pieces light up the Cottom Farm. There’s a lighted parking area, a Christmas village, hot chocolate, and hayrides to the manor house on most nights. The manor also has choreographed light shows, a hayride to and from The Manor House, a self-guided tour, Hot Cocoa and cookies for sale at the Marketplace with Santa’s Elves, and, of course, pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus. For those who would rather stay out of the possible crowds but not miss the beauty of the farm, there is a live stream each night that you can watch from the comfort of your own home!
LAKESIDE MORNINGS ON THE DECK
Now that your small cottage home lifestyle in coveted Central Florida is centered around beautiful Lake Andrew, there is no need to wake up early, catch the morning sunlight reflecting off the lake, feel the breeze coming off the water, and basking in the warmth of a new day. But doesn’t breathing in the cool lakeside air while sharing a warm cup of coffee with family or friends sound like an incredible way to start the day and make the most of this holiday season?
Whatever you choose to do to fully invest in this year’s holidays, make it uniquely yours. One of the reasons people choose the cottage home lifestyle is to let go of the things that complicate life and take us away from really experiencing each day. Enjoy life each and every day of the year in a community that offers exclusive private amenities, close proximity to world-class golf courses, events, diverse shops and restaurants, top-notch medical facilities, and an abundance of outdoor activities.
